 WebIreland's Content Problem

Content?
WebIreland's  Strange Content Problem
2010 Hrs 28 July 1999

WebIreland magazine bills itself as being Ireland's premier Internet business magazine and the magazine is always trying to increase it's content. However checking www.webireland.ie would lead you to think that they are in a different business - one devoted to decreasing content. The webireland.ie site points to a breast reduction surgery site.

It is an automatic assumption that the www.webireland.ie site would be the same as the www.webireland.com site and owned by the same company. The reality is that WebIreland magazine only owns the .com site. Incidentally, the Web Ireland magazine site has been dormant for over a year now. A post in the Irish Internet Association's Webmaster list by  www.globalirish.com revealed the difference between the .com and .ie sites.

The Irish company office had apparently told WebIreland magazine that the company name Web Ireland was too generic and thus they were forced to register as Web Ireland magazine. According to Stephen Finnegan, the publisher of Web Ireland, a few months later a web development company managed to register as Web Ireland. A search in the Irish companies database on www.irion.ie revealed that there is no Web Ireland company listed. It is probable that the business name "Web Ireland" was registered with the companies office.

With the procedure that the Irish Internet Domain Registry uses to  allocate domain names, the holder of the business name Web Ireland was entitled to the webireland.ie domain.

This is perhaps a classical example of how a compromised domain situation can affect even those who claim to be experts. With the lack of content on WebIreland magazine's site, the other one will definitely get a lot more hits.
