Backing up a HD had some rather unexpected consequences. It was only a small 406 MB drive but Windows 98 had managed to fill it completely. Flushing the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser cache had been done continually to save space. It appeared to flush the cache but the hidden directories kept filling up. Back Orifice 2000 To Be Released

When the first version of Back Orifice was released last year it only worked on Windows 95 and W98. A new version, scheduled to be released tomorrow (July 10th) will work on Windows 2000 and Windows NT. This new version, dubbed BO2K will also include the source code. Full Story

M$ IIS4/ASP Bug Allows Complete Access To NT Servers

A bug, discovered by Spin Solutions' internet director, Tom Murphy, in Microsoft's Internet Information Server 4 allows full access to all of an NT server's harddisk. The bug, now named the "Spinbug" potentially puts at risk the data of thousands of websites on NT virtual servers. It arises from a misconfiguration of access privileges and an obscure ASP object native to IIS/ASP. If decent security is not implemented, a user running an ASP script can gain full read/write access to files anywhere on the NT server's harddrives. With many websites taking creditcard orders, the danger is very real but the gravity of the situation completely escaped Microsoft. Full Story

Telecom Eireann may have competition in a market that it believed was a monopoly. A Reverse Phonenumber directory CD for Ireland has been released. The speed of operation of the CD is said to be magnitudes faster than that of Telecom Eireann's ordinary phone directory CD. Full Story

Back Orifice Creates A Stink For Microsoft

It was something that Microsoft could have done without - a hacker program that exploited the apparently weak security of Windows 95 and Windows 98. As if to add salt to the wound, the hackers claimed that they would release a version for Windows NT as soon as they got around to installing that OS.  Full Story
