Websites The Irish Times newspaper, the most popular Irish website makes a bid for portalhood today with the launch of Ireland.com The new portal will offer free e-mail via a US company Commtouch. It is an expansion of the Irish Times website and the new site will build upon the existing system adding a a business subsite, a technology subsite and an guide to events in Dublin. There is a certain irony in the Dublin emphasis. The Irish Times is one of Ireland's national newspapers. It is a possibility that ireland.com will expand coverage to the rest of Ireland when it is up and running properly. However such an expansion would not be possible with the present resources so some kind of contra deal with local content providers as local.ie has done may be the best solution. Specialist Irish internet and technology magazines are not unduly worried about this inclusion as they expect the content of the technology subsite to be no different from the lightweight Computimes page. The non-specialist Irish internet and technology magazines may suffer though. Only PC Live (a part of the Infolive website) has any visible presence on the web. Ireland's biggest business internet magazine is in the process of relaunching it's website in the next few weeks. Dot IE magazine, the main Irish internet magazine for the non-technical public does not have any content on it's difficult to find website. The site is due to go live later today at 1800 Hrs. This first Irish portal will inevitably open the way for more portal ventures however the extortionate cost of bandwidth in Ireland is a major limiting factor. |
