Gone In 60 Seconds GSM Phone Hack Recovers Key In One Minute 0630 Hrs 07 December 1999
A paper by Alex Biryukov and Adi Shamir to be published soon outlines a method to recover the key for an encrypted GSM conversation in sixty seconds using a PC with 128 MB of RAM and 73 GB of hard drive space. The security of GSM phone technology a sieve. The critical algorithms have been flawed and it is possible to dump the contents of the simcard and emulate it using a PC. Weak Crypto DVD's CSS Encryption Cracked 0600 Hrs 02 November 1999
The encryption on DVD's Content Scrambling System has been hacked. The encryption algorithm appears to be weak. Though a cracker program for DVD had been in circulation for some time, the algorithm and the code was only released last week on a Linux DVD development mailing list. This means that Linux users can play DVD without having to boot back into Microsoft Windows. It would also make the whole concept of the current regionalised copyrights void. Full Story

Hamburg Computer Chaos Club announced that they had posted the source code and excutable for a GSM SIM card emulator. The emulator (gsm_emu) runs on DOS with a SEASON type interface. The SEASON interface is the most common interface in the world for hobbyist satellite television piracy. Full Story

One of the main vulnerabilities of any smart card based system is that it can be spoofed. One smart card can feed a multitude of decoders. The McCormac Hack, simply stated is the redistribution of the key data from the datastream between a decoder and legitimate smartcard to enable any decoder with a suitable pseudo- card in the card slot to decode a channel. Thus given an adequate communications network, a single subscription could run a town or a country. The effect for the Pay TV service would be devastating. Full Story
GSM Hacked GSM Phone Cloned Dateline 13 April 1998
The Smartcard Developer Association (SDA) and two U.C. Berkeley researchers jointly announced today that digital GSM cellphones are susceptible to cloning, contrary to the belief of even the telecommunication providers that have fielded them. GSM (Groupe Speciale Mobile) is the most widely used cellphone standard in the world, with more than 79 million GSM phones in use worldwide.
