BSkyB - Free Digital Receivers in Effort To Boost Subscriber Figures
0840 Hrs 6 May 1999

BSkyB is to give away digital receivers starting in June. the boxes which had cost up to £200. The move is seen as one designed to enhance the rather lacklustre take-up on BSkyB's digital television service. The figures to date on Sky Digital have been poor and most of them seem to be existing subscribers who are upgrading to the new digital service though without necessarily increasing their level of subscription. Existing Sky Digital subscribers will not be entitled to a refund. New subscribers will have to pay £2 more in subscription fees. Those availing of this new offer will have to pay a £40 installation fee.

Such an action is not without precedent. When Sky was starting out ten years ago, the tricky problem of encryption was handled in a similar manner. However the situation then was significantly different as the public was new to satellite television. Murdoch's Sky Television beat British Satellite Broadcasting in that conflict but it was a close run thing. BSkyB's competition at present is the UK terrestrial ON Digital service.

The motivation for BSkyB's action seems to have been an announcement of a deal between Carlton and ITV to give away free digital terrestrial tv boxes this beginning this weekend. As to motivation for analog subscribers, BSkyB announced that it would switch off the analog services within three years. The effect on the long suffering retail business is probably going to be dire.
