Political The Irish government is apparently toying with the idea of selling off RTE´s (the Irish national broadcaster) infrastructure and preventing it having a holding in the new terrestrial digital television. The Irish cabinet will hear proposals next month that could result in the transmission and distribution infrastructure of RTE being sold off to the highest bidder. However the sell-off should it proceed will spend the end for any form of structured digital terrestrial television (DTT) in Ireland. Full Story BSkyB Losses The Sky Digital venture has made a serious dent in BSkyB's profits. The results showed that BSkyB had made a pre-tax loss of £389 Million Sterling. Much of that loss has been attributed to funding Sky Digital and the converting from an analogue subscriber base with such incentives as free Digiboxes. However BSkyB lost 87000 more analogue subscribers than it gained in digital subscribers. Full Story Digital TV From July 1st, Cable And Wireless will offer a digital cable television service on networks in North West England. It will roll out the service on it's London nets in October. The move is one of the greatest threats to Sky Digital and perhaps to OnDigital, the UK's terrestrial digital television broadcaster. Full Story Digital TV BSkyB is to give away digital receivers starting in June. the boxes which had cost up to £200. The move is seen as one designed to enhance the rather lacklustre take-up on BSkyB's digital television service. The figures to date on Sky Digital have been poor and most of them seem to be existing subscribers who are upgrading to the new digital service though without necessarily increasing their level of subscription. Full Story Digital Terrestrial TV RTE Online is one of the better Irish sites on the web. Often criticised for being top heavy and insular, RTE's digital outlook is anything but. RTE plans to implement a digital terrestrial television service with internet access. What makes this so unusual is that the back channel for internet will be over the air. Full Story |
