European Scrambling Systems 5, the Black
Book, is the one book that provides an insight into the world of signal
insecurity. Over the last eight years, this book has become the "bible"
of the Blackbox industry. Now in the fifth edition, John McCormac analyses
all of the latest hacks and scrambling systems. This time the systems beyond
Europe are examined. DSS, the North American Digital Satellite System is
the latest subject the book contains source code for a program to read
the attributes from a DSS card.
This new edition also includes the most
comprehensive set of circuit diagrams and PCB patterns for pirate smart
card technology. The circuits for the battery cards, and the PCB patterns
for the PIC16C84 based PIC smart cards, the COP smart cards, the Phoenix
Interface and the SEASON interfaces are given. A circuit diagram of a Phone
Card emulator is also included.
Much of the Phoenix circuitry and Season
interface circuitry can be used directly on the DSS system without modification.
Full constructional details for these interfaces are given.
Many of the predictions made by McCormac
in past editions, such as the Battery Card and modem updatable smart cards
have already come true. In this edition the future of hacking on digital
television is examined.
According to this book, Digital TV will
be hacked and the methods used to update these new cards are outlined,
strictly as predictions of course.
European Scrambling Systems is the World's
standard text on the subject. It is required reading for anyone involved
with conditional access systems whether as a hobby or as a profession.
This book has apparently been banned in some countries due to the nature
of the information. Naturally the information is for educational use only.
