Serial Losers A small Irish company based in Cork, Adornais has managed to beat the much vaunted Adornis/Nua combination and has launched an online jewelry store. The site was created by Abu and appears fully functional. After a keynote by Adornis' Declan Ganley at the Internet World show in Dublin backed up by Gerry McGovern of Nua (self-professed world-renowned Internet philosopher and Thought Leader among other things), this latest development brings home the shallowness of the hype surrounding Adornis.com which still hasn't launched despite having being announced a few months ago. The industry is becoming increasingly cynical about Adornis and Nua. The Adornis venture seems to be a very complex site to put into operation as it relies on industrial strength database infrastructure. The task of putting such a site online is quite beyond the talents of Nua. It requires real e-commerce and database skills. Two other Dublin companies, Cuanav and Frontend apparently are doing all the hard work. From what HackWatch has seen, web design on the Adornis site seems to be very derivative of other existing online jewelry sites. But that is the major problem for Adornis - these other sites exist and are trading on the net while the Adornis venture lumbers around. It is however due for a launch early this month though nobody in the industry seems to be holding their breath. The Cork based Adornais site is not on the same scale as the Adornis project. In fact it is at least a couple of magnitudes smaller. The web development is good and similar to the quality of many of the online jewelry stores. The shopping software behind it appears to be Minivend, a Perl based program that is relatively easy to set up and can use databases or flat files for the product data. The site offers secure payment. With the Christmas season closing in like a juggernaut, the pressure is on those involved with Adornis to get things up and running.
